Creating an Egg Carton Flower Box

Here in Wisconsin when you’re craving spring and not a flower is in sight, we make our own! In this Eco-friendly tutorial, Cloud 9 Workshop puts egg cartons to good use.

Materials Needed:

  • 2 egg cartons
  • Paint (acrylic, tempera or watercolor)
  • Brushes
  • Water cups
  • Plastic container lids for paint pallets
  • Craft sticks or popsicle sticks
  • School glue
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Hot glue, utility knife
  • Optional: Buttons or pom poms

Process:
ADULTS

  • Cut apart sections of one egg carton (Tip: a utility knife works better than scissors)
  • Glue second egg carton closed, Turn up-side-down & cut 1/2” slits in each section (Slits will serve as openings for craft sticks)

KIDS

  • Cut egg carton sections into flower shapes of varying sizes
  • Paint flower shapes & craft sticks then let dry
  • Glue together flower shapes & attach them to a craft stick ‘stem’
  • If desired, glue buttons or pom poms to flower center (Tip: hot glue works best)
  • When dry, slide craft stick ‘stems’ into slits of egg carton
  • Optional: Add egg carton ‘leaves’ or ‘grass’ to finished flower box
  • ENJOY! the perfect full bloom flower box for a Wisconsin Spring!

Cloud 9 Kid Connection:
Cutting egg cartons can be tricky but allow your children the opportunity to cut or tear individual sections of the egg carton to exercise their hand muscles and cutting skills. For flower shape & color ideas look at seed catalogs or take a trip to your local library, garden center or our very own Milwaukee Domes!
